Description
Bristlecone pines eek out a bare existence in the high mountains of the western states, usually above 10,000 feet. They are able to exist in the barren soil by conserving all their energy. Growth may be measured in millimeters or less each year and only a small part of the tree may actually be alive as was the case with this tangled sentinel in the White Mountains of California.
